Frequently Asked Questions

What is a KML file?

KML (Keyhole Markup Language) is an XML-based format for geographic data, originally developed for Google Earth. It can store points (placemarks), polygons, lines, and other geographic features with styling information.

What is the difference between KML and KMZ?

KML is a plain XML text file. KMZ is a compressed (zipped) version of KML that can also include images and other resources. This viewer currently supports .kml files. For .kmz files, extract the .kml file first using any zip utility.

Is my KML data private?

Yes. Your KML file is processed entirely in your browser. No data is uploaded to any server. The file is parsed using JavaScript in your browser and displayed on the map client-side.

Can I view Google Earth files?

Yes. KML is the native format for Google Earth. You can export KML files from Google Earth Pro and view them in this tool. The viewer displays placemarks, polygons, and paths with their original coordinates.
