What is the difference between decimal degrees and DMS?

Decimal Degrees (DD) express latitude and longitude as a single decimal number, e.g. 40.7589. Degrees Minutes Seconds (DMS) break this down into 40° 45' 32” N — the traditional surveying format. Both describe the same location; DD is more common in digital tools, DMS in fieldwork.

What is UTM used for?

Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) is a metric coordinate system widely used in topographic mapping, land surveying, and GIS. It divides the Earth into 60 zones and provides easting/northing values in meters, making distance calculations straightforward.

MGRS (Military Grid Reference System) is used by NATO militaries and some GIS applications. It builds on UTM by adding a 100 km grid square identifier using two letters, resulting in compact references like 18TWL8562812497.

A Geohash encodes a geographic location into a short alphanumeric string using a base32 encoding. Longer Geohash strings are more precise (8 chars ≈ 19m accuracy). They are commonly used in databases for proximity queries.
