Original research
We collected the 158 most recent public App Store reviews of GPS Fields Area Measure from the US, UK, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and Irish storefronts (January 2018 to September 2026). 84 of them were rated 1 to 3 stars. We read each one and tagged every problem it described, so one review can count toward more than one problem.
The biggest complaint isn't about measuring at all: one in three critical reviews is about paying. Several reviewers say they had to create an account before they could see a price, and long-time users say the app used to be free. If you're switching, look for an app that shows its pricing up front, doesn't make you create an account, and lets you measure before you pay.
Method: Apple's public customer-review feed, pulled on September 28, 2026. This is a small, self-selected sample of unhappy reviewers. It shows what they complain about, not the app's overall quality — GPS Fields Area Measure holds a 4.6★ average.
The free plan's limits and the paid plan's price should be public before you download, not revealed after you create an account.
You should be able to open the app and measure a field right away. An account should only be needed if you want one.
KML and KMZ open in Google Earth; GeoJSON and Shapefile open in QGIS and ArcGIS; PDF works for clients, lenders and permit offices.
GPS Fields Area Measure requires iOS 17.1 or later. If you have an older iPhone, check each alternative's minimum iOS version before switching.
GPS land measurement app for iPhone (iOS 15 or later) and Android. Walk the boundary or tap points on a satellite map to measure area, perimeter and distance, including circles and cut-out holes. There is no sign-up step: open the app and start measuring.
Best for: Farmers, landowners and field professionals who want GIS-ready exports without creating an account
Limitation: The free plan is limited to 3 saved measurements and 2 exports. Unlimited use needs LandLens Pro, which is priced on this site before you download.
Popular GPS area app (over 10,000 US App Store ratings, 4.5★) with walk and tap modes, circular-area measurement, cut-out holes and photo attachments.
Best for: People who want to attach photos to each measurement
Limitation: Full features need a paid plan ($5.99/week to $79.99/year in its published August 2026 pricing). Its App Store privacy label lists location as data used to track you.
Long-running map measuring app (843 US App Store ratings, 4.6★) for distances, perimeters and areas on satellite imagery, with circles, rectangles, undo/redo and multiple areas on screen.
Best for: Measuring from satellite imagery without walking the site, on older devices (iOS 13+)
Limitation: Some features and extra map sources are sold as in-app purchases. Its listing focuses on measuring over satellite imagery, so check that it fits if you need to walk boundaries with live GPS.
Free-to-download measuring app (607 US App Store ratings, 4.6★) with pin-on-map and walking modes, plus many extras: elevation, a compass, a UTM/MGRS coordinate converter and custom WMS/XYZ map layers.
Best for: Users who want lots of extra field utilities in one app
Limitation: Its long feature list makes the interface busier than a measuring-first app.
Switching isn't always worth it. GPS Fields Area Measure works fully offline, exports KML, KMZ and Shapefile, lets you add drone imagery or WMS map layers, and stores notes and photos on each point. If you already rely on those features and its price works for you, keep it.
For most people, LandLens: it runs on iPhone (iOS 15+) and Android, needs no account to start, and exports KML, KMZ, GeoJSON, Shapefile and PDF. Its free plan covers 3 saved measurements and 2 exports; LandLens Pro unlocks unlimited use.
It's free to download, but reviewers report that full use requires a Premium subscription, and several say they had to create an account before they could see the price. Premium also adds cloud storage and advanced tools.
In our read of 84 critical App Store reviews, the most common reasons were pricing and billing (28 reviews), crashes or lost data (15), forced sign-up or login problems (13), and difficulty of use (12).
Yes, if you can export them. Export your fields from GPS Fields Area Measure as KML (not KMZ), then import that file into an app that reads KML. In LandLens, importing KML, GeoJSON or GPX files is part of LandLens Pro.
Download LandLens on iPhone or Android and start measuring right away — no account needed. Upgrade to Pro to import your KML files.
