Formula
Acres/hr = (Width × Speed × Efficiency) ÷ 8.25
8.25 = 43,560 sq ft/acre ÷ 5,280 ft/mile
The acres-per-hour formula is the standard way to measure farm equipment productivity, also known as effective field capacity. It tells you how much ground your implement actually covers in one hour of operation, accounting for real-world inefficiencies like turning time, overlap between passes, and stops for filling or emptying.
The Formula
Acres/hr = (Width × Speed × Efficiency) ÷ 8.25
Where width is in feet, speed is in mph, and efficiency is a decimal (0.70 = 70%). The constant 8.25 converts the result from (feet × miles/hr) to acres/hr.
Field efficiency is the ratio of actual productive work time to total field time. No operation runs at 100% because you lose time to:
| Operation | Efficiency Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Spraying | 60–80% | Wide booms offset refill time |
| Combining | 60–75% | Unloading grain on the go helps |
| Plowing / Tillage | 70–85% | Continuous, few stops |
| Planting / Seeding | 55–75% | Frequent refills reduce efficiency |
| Mowing | 70–85% | Small fields lower efficiency |
A tractor pulling a 12-foot disc harrow at 6 mph with 70% efficiency:
Acres/hr = (12 ft × 6 mph × 0.70) ÷ 8.25
Acres/hr = 50.4 ÷ 8.25
Acres/hr = 6.11
At this rate, a 50-acre field would take about 8 hours and 11 minutes to complete, traveling roughly 49 miles total.
Use the formula: Acres/hr = (Implement Width in feet × Speed in mph × Field Efficiency) ÷ 8.25. The 8.25 constant converts from feet-miles to acres.
70% is a common average. Large rectangular fields can reach 80-85%, while small or irregularly shaped fields may drop to 50-60%.
It depends on implement width and speed. A 12-ft implement at 6 mph with 70% efficiency covers about 6.1 acres/hr. A 24-ft implement doubles that to ~12.2 acres/hr.
It equals 43,560 sq ft per acre divided by 5,280 ft per mile. This converts the product of width (ft) and speed (mph) into acres per hour.
Theoretical capacity assumes 100% efficiency (no turns, no overlap, no stops). This calculator uses effective field capacity which applies a realistic efficiency factor.
