For a rectangular room, multiply the length by the width in feet. For example, a 12x14 foot room is 168 square feet. For irregular shapes, break the area into simpler shapes (rectangles, triangles), calculate each, and add them together.
One acre equals 43,560 square feet. A standard American football field (not including end zones) is about 48,000 square feet or 1.1 acres. For reference, a quarter-acre lot is about 10,890 square feet.
