SeedingRateCalculator.tableNote
Seeding rate is the amount of seed planted per unit area, typically expressed in pounds per acre (lbs/acre) or kilograms per hectare (kg/ha). Getting the right seeding rate is critical: too little seed leads to thin stands and weed pressure, while too much wastes expensive seed and creates overcrowding.
The basic formula is simple: Total Seed = Seeding Rate × Field Area. If you're planting wheat at 120 lbs/acre on a 50-acre field, you need 6,000 lbs of seed (100 bags at 60 lbs each).
| Crop | Rate (lbs/acre) | Row Spacing |
|---|---|---|
| Corn | ~20 | 30" |
| Wheat | 90–120 | 7.5" |
| Soybeans | 50–70 | 15–30" |
| Oats | 64–96 | 7.5" |
| Alfalfa | 15–25 | 6–7" |
| Cover Crop Blend | 40–60 | Broadcast |
Row spacing directly affects plant population per acre. The row spacing calculator shows you exactly how many seeds per acre your chosen combination produces. This is especially important for row crops like corn and soybeans where target populations drive yield.
Corn is typically planted at about 20 lbs per acre (approximately 32,000 seeds per acre at 30-inch row spacing). Actual rates vary by hybrid and target population.
Winter wheat is typically drilled at 90–120 lbs per acre (1.2–1.8 million seeds per acre). Higher rates are used for late planting or poor seedbed conditions.
Multiply the seeding rate (lbs/acre) by your field area (acres). For example, 120 lbs/acre × 50 acres = 6,000 lbs. Divide by bag weight to get the number of bags.
Cover crop blends are typically seeded at 40–60 lbs per acre depending on the species mix. Common blends include cereal rye, crimson clover, and radish.
Narrower row spacing increases plant population per acre. Corn at 30-inch rows with 8-inch seed spacing yields about 26,000 seeds/acre, while 15-inch rows would double that density.
