DMS stands for Degrees Minutes Seconds, a way to express latitude and longitude. For example, the White House is at 38 53 51.6 N, 77 02 11.6 W. Each degree is divided into 60 minutes, and each minute into 60 seconds.
Decimal Degrees (DD) expresses coordinates as simple decimal numbers. The White House at 38 53 51.6 N, 77 02 11.6 W in DMS equals 38.897667, -77.036556 in Decimal Degrees. Negative values indicate South latitude or West longitude.
DMS is traditional and used on paper maps, legal documents, and aviation. Decimal Degrees is preferred for digital mapping, GPS devices, web applications, and databases. Most mapping APIs (Google Maps, Mapbox) use Decimal Degrees.
The conversion is mathematically exact. DMS and Decimal Degrees represent the same coordinate, just in different formats. This tool preserves precision to 6 decimal places, which gives accuracy to approximately 0.11 meters (4.3 inches).
